Veronika Decides to Die (Portuguese: Veronika decide morrer) is a novel by Paulo Coelho. It tells the story of 24 year old Veronika, who appears to have everything in life going for her, but who decides to kill herself. This book is partly based on Coelho's experience in variousmental institutions (see the biography Confessions of A Pilgrim by Juan Arias). It is based around the subject of madness. The gist of the message is that "collective madness is called sanity".

Veronika Decides to Die has been adapted for theatre a number of times, and was also used in other artistic references.

In this book "The Arabian Nights" are translated from the French version of Monsieur Galland, who dropped

out the poetry and a great deal of what the Arabian authors thought funny, though it seems wearisome to us. In

this book the stories are shortened here and there, and omissions are made of pieces only suitable for Arabs

and old gentlemen. The translations are by the writers of the tales in the Fairy Books, and the pictures are by

Mr. Ford.

But he had not reckoned on a dowry; what allured him was the remarkable beauty of the innocent girl, above all her innocent appearance, which had a peculiar attraction for a vicious profligate, who had hitherto admired only the coarser types of feminine beauty.
